Who We Are

The American Board of Managed Care Nursing (ABMCN) administers a certification program for managed care professionals. Our certification covers the broad spectrum of managed care from Case and Care Management to Accreditation, from Quality Improvement to Transitions of Care, from Utilization Management to Disease Management and more. The Certified Managed Care Nurses (CMCNs) and Professionals (CMCPs)  who hold our certification also cover a spectrum of medical licensure–while most of our members are LPNs, LVNs, RNs, and ARPNs; we also have LCSWs, LPCs, MDs, and PAs.

Formed in 1998, ABMCN is a non-profit 501(c) 6 organization whose national examination tests candidate’s knowledge of patient-centered care to member populations in managed care. The ABMCN examination has been developed and reviewed by nurses with practical experience in managed care and peer acceptance as nurse leaders. There are currently over 1,600 active CMCN/CMCPs across the US.

CMCN/CMCP Examination

The examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions focusing on vocabulary, concepts, and application of managed care in today’s healthcare environment. The examination must be completed within four hours. It is closed book and proctored. It can be taken by paper or computer. A passing score of 70% or higher is required to earn the certification. The exam sitting fee is $250.

Please be advised that in order to take this examination, you must meet all eligibility requirements: CMCN/CMCP candidates must hold a medical license (e.g. RN, LPN, LCSW, LPC, etc) in an American State, territory, or protectorate. Further, CMCN/CMCP candidates must either complete the “Comprehensive Introduction to Managed Care Nursing” curriculum available from the AAMCN or they may submit a resume to the ABMCN Board of Directors (via jbeilhart@abmcn.org) that attests to a significant background in managed care.

Certification Renewal

The certification will be renewed at three-year intervals beginning either January 1st  or July 1st following the completion of the certification exam. CMCN/CMCPs must demonstrate ongoing professional development with proof of 25 CE's, verification of current medical licensure, and a $55.00 renewal fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Proctors can be: a supervisor, HR rep, or education rep at your current company; anyone who holds a current CMCN certification; or anyone who offers proctoring services—a local library, community college, or testing center; proctors must physically stay with the candidate during the exam. We also have remote proctoring available and offer the exam at our annual conferences for an additional $25.

  • We send out exam results via email within two business days of receiving the exam. Exams taken by computer we receive as soon as you finish it. For paper exams, it just depends on when it gets back to us (they are sent via FedEx, so maybe about a week).

  • Yes, we allow for one retest in the event of a failed examination. You do have to pay the $250 sitting fee again. If you fail the exam a second time, you must wait twelve months to try to sit the exam another time.

  • No, while AAMCN and ABMCN are sister associations, they are two separate organizations. No AAMCN membership is required for an ABMCN certification.

  • You have the option to retain your credential in an Emeritus capacity. The one-time fee for Emeritus status is $95 for all CMCNs and CMCPs. The Emeritus credential does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Please email jbeilhart@abmcn.org for more information.
